SYNOPSIS

Synopsis

Nine-year-old Charlie is a tomboy navigating the tricky world of growing up. Her best friendship is under strain: while Charlie loves adventure and storm-chasing, her friend is all about her upcoming “makeover” slumber party. Charlie longs to fit in, but dreads the idea of make-up, curls and painted nails. Charlie’s changing body and the on-set of puberty leave her even more uncomfortable in her skin and apprehensive about growing up. Confiding in her oldest friend, her teddy bear - the one her mother insists she’s too old for - Charlie reflects on her fears and wishes her father was there to guide her.

Perched in a tree, late at night, Charlie watches the gathering clouds and waits for the storm, anxious to catch the first raindrop and make a wish - a tradition she shares with her father. The raindrop is Allie, who reveals it dreams of being extraordinary, a rainbow, instead of of just one of millions of ordinary drops.

Allie encourages Charlie to attend the slumber party, reassuring her that make-up washes off and that being herself is enough to make friends. In turn, Charlie teaches Allie about the weather and how a raindrop really can transform into a rainbow. Together, they hatch a daring plan to take Allie to the seaside, even as another storm approaches. When they arrive, Charlie sets her teddy bear, along with Allie, adrift on the ocean waves — a symbolic act of hope, letting both herself and Allie move closer to their dreams.

Charlie’s father returned home in her absence, realizes she’s missing and races out into the storm to find her. Charlie navigates her way home through howling wind and rain and is finally reunited with her father. On the harrowing drive back, Charlie tells her father all about her new friend and their adventure.

Just as they glimpse the safety of home, the rain stops, the clouds part and shafts of sunlight shine down under the arch of a brilliant rainbow.
